Solar Power for a Phone-Charging Business: How to Size It

A phone-charging point can look like a light load until many devices charge at once. Count the charging ports, the real draw at the sockets, the hours you operate and every other appliance at the kiosk.

Count simultaneous charging demand

Write down how many phones and other devices can be connected at the busiest time. Check the ratings of the chargers or power strips you intend to use. A charger’s printed maximum is a useful upper bound, but actual draw varies as phones charge. Include losses and avoid treating every phone as the same load.

Add business support loads

Lights, a fan, POS terminal, router and small television may run throughout the day. Their total energy can exceed what you expect from charging alone. Enter each item, quantity and hours into the audit, and flag any device that must remain on after sunset.

Compare power and storage separately

The inverter must support simultaneous demand. The battery must store enough energy for your chosen operating pattern, and the panels must replenish it under local conditions.
